What they do
IN 2007, UNDER THE AUTHORITY of THE ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT, NOAA FISHERIES BEGAN PROVIDING GRANT FUNDS to OUR NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION to SUPPORT PUBLIC OUTREACH ACTIVITIES THAT PROMOTE RESPECTFUL BEHAVIOR AROUND THE HONU. MALAMA I NA HONUS PRESENCE ON THE BEACH HAS SIGNIFICANTLY HELPED REDUCE DISTURBANCE to BASKING TURTLES. MALAMA I NA HONU CONTINUE to HAVE A GREAT RELATIONSHIP WITH NOAA and THEY RECENTLY POSTED TWO ARTICLES; ONE of THEM THAT HIGHLIGHTS THE HEARTBEAT of OUR ORGANIZATION. TODAY, THE HAWAIIAN GREEN SEA TURTLE is A "THREATENED SPECIES," UNDER THE FEDERAL ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT. SINCE RECEIVING THE PROTECTION of THAT ACT IN 1978, THE HONU HAVE MADE A MARVELOUS COMEBACK and IN RECENT YEARS HAVE EXPERIENCED AN INCREASE IN THEIR NUMBERS IN EXCESS of 5% ANNUALLY. THEIR PROTECTION WHILE PEACEFULLY BASKING ON THE BEACH and SPREADING THE WORD to THE PUBLIC of THE CONTINUING NEED for PRESERVATION EFFORTS ON THEIR BEHALF is THE MISSION of MALAMA I NA HONU. OUR VOLUNTEERS SUCCESSFUL
Are they doing good?
The public paperwork has several good signs. Now check whether the charity can show who it helped.
Here is the honest answer: A tax form shows money and paperwork. It cannot prove that people, animals, or the community were truly helped.

Money made simple
Ask these three easy questions
- Who did you help? Ask for a recent story or report that shows real results.
- What will my money do? Ask exactly what your gift will pay for.
- Is this really the charity? Give only through its official website or confirmed phone number.
Pay context: The highest compensation shown in this filing is $55,436 for DEBBIE HERRERA (SEE SCHEDULE). Compare pay with organizations of similar size and complexity.
Bottom line: Good paperwork is a good sign—not proof. The best answer comes when the charity can show what it changed, who it helped, and what your gift will do. YouCanGiveBack does not endorse or grade organizations.
